It’s been three years since Beck’s previous album Morning Phase was released and in many ways it was a perfect sequel to his 2002 album Sea Change. While his new album Colors still features the exceptional songwriting we all know him for, the album couldn’t sounds more different from anything he has ever done. He has injected his music with a huge dose of pop and the result, is brilliant.
Chuck Berry passed away on the 18th March of this year and his final gift to the world was a new album, released on the 9th June. It had been 38 years since his previous album Rock It was released in 1979 with Berry focusing more on live work since then, so when news broke before his passing that he was working on a new album I was ecstatic.
Seven years after the release of their last proper studio album, Plastic Beach, Gorillaz are back with their brand new album Humanz. Rumours of this album began to surface two years ago while Damon Albarn was touring with Blur and those rumours escalated last year with confirmed reports that he was in the studio working on a new album. The result is Humanz, a wonderful album that sees Gorillaz return to their very best.
Last month John Mayer released Wave One from his new album The Search For Everything, essentially the first four songs of the album. And today Mayer released the next four, Wave Two, and I’ve been listening to it non-stop all day. These four songs build on the brilliance of the first four and contain so many different vibes, tones and genres it’s unreal.
The first studio album in over a decade sees The Rolling Stones return to their roots with an incredible blues album containing nothing but covers of classic blues numbers. There’d been a lot of speculation over the last few years as to whether the band would ever return to the studio, and even though there isn’t an original number anywhere on the album, Blue & Lonesome is one hell of a musical statement from the greatest rock and roll band of all time.
It’s getting to that time of year where Christmas albums are being released ready for the holiday season and I was overcome with excitement a few months ago when I found out She & Him would be releasing their second Christmas album. Their first, A Very She & Him Christmas, was released in 2011 and has been a favourite of mine ever since. Their new album Christmas Party carries on the tradition in fantastic style.
